Fasted Travel, Could Eating Less While Travelling Actually Help?

Recently, during a short trip to Milan, I experimented with something simple.

A completely zero calorie flight.

No airport breakfast.
No snacks.
No sugary coffees.

Just:

  • Water

  • Black coffee

  • Fasting

The flight itself was only 2 hours 15 minutes, so nothing extreme.

But the interesting part was how I felt afterwards.

Normally, travel days leave people feeling:

  • Bloated

  • Sluggish

  • Tired

  • Mentally flat

Especially when combined with:

  • Early alarms

  • Poor sleep

  • Airport food

  • Long periods of sitting

And with a hard Saturday event workout planned after landing, I expected to feel exactly that.

But honestly?

I felt superb.

Light.
Alert.
Clear headed.
Ready to move.

No bloating.
No heavy stomach.
No food crash.

In fact, I was able to train almost straight after landing without needing 1–2 days to “bring myself back round” from travelling.

No using poor food choices, airport snacks, or travel as an excuse to feel rubbish.

That made me think more deeply about something:

A lot of travel eating is not true hunger.

It is:

  • Habit

  • Convenience

  • Boredom

  • Routine

Why Fasted Travel Might Help

Travel already places stress on the body.

You are:

  • Sleeping less

  • Sitting more

  • Moving less

  • Often dehydrated

  • Completely out of routine

Adding ultra processed airport food on top of that can sometimes make you feel even worse.

For some people, reducing food intake during travel may help them:

  • Feel lighter

  • Improve mental clarity

  • Reduce bloating

  • Arrive feeling fresher

Not because fasting is “magic.”

But because the body sometimes performs better with less digestion and less unnecessary grazing.

But What About Enjoying Holidays?

This is important.

Not everyone wants to fast while travelling.

For many people, holidays are about:

  • Relaxation

  • Great food

  • Switching off

  • Enjoying experiences

And that is completely fine.

Health should improve happiness, not remove it.

But for people looking to optimise energy and performance, strategic fasting during travel may actually improve the holiday experience itself.

Instead of arriving:

  • Bloated

  • Sluggish

  • Exhausted

Some people may arrive feeling:

  • More energised

  • More mobile

  • More mentally clear

  • Ready to enjoy the trip sooner

The goal is not restriction.

The goal is simply feeling better.

Final Thoughts

This short Italy trip made me far more interested in fasted travel, especially for longer journeys in future.

Not as an extreme challenge.

Just as a practical tool.

Because sometimes the body performs better with:

  • Less digestion

  • Less grazing

  • More hydration

  • More intention

And maybe that is something worth exploring.
